About LSSC

Under the umbrella of Laban/Bartenieff and Somatic Studies International (LSSI), LSSC presents Modular Certificate Programs in Laban Movement Analysis and BodyMind Practice(TM) in Vancouver and Toronto. Completion of the full program includes the Certification in Laban Studies (CMA) award conferred in affiliation with LIMS®. Our first Vancouver program begins with Module One, in December, 2008. The LIMS® conferred CMA and the Certificate in Movement Analysis and BodyMind Practice are awarded with successful completion of all five Modules.

As the umbrella organisation for Laban/Bartenieff and Somatic Studies Canada, LSSI is committed to providing in-depth, experiential movement study programs within the framework of Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis (LMA) and its application as a somatic, bodymind practice. Modular Certificate programs are designed to refine participants’ abilities to understand and explore movement as the basis of lived experience-in life as well as in art.

The LSSC Vancouver Modular Program

The Vancouver Certificate program takes place within a vibrant and long-standing professional LMA community. Guest and other faculty will be comprised primarily of members of the Vancouver area Laban/Bartenieff community.

The Modular Program includes five, two-week intensive session blocks, in December, June, and August months. Modules One through Three can be taken as self-contained units, while Modules Four and Five require completion of all previous modules.

All Modules require pre-requisites of Introduction to Anatomy/Kinesiology, or Experiential Anatomy; Introduction to Laban Movement Analysis, and Introduction to Bartenieff Fundamentals (BF). Pre-requisite, introductory courses are offered regularly in British Columbia, and other parts of Canada. For dates and locations, see Introductory Programs at www.labancan.org.

While Modules are structured thematically as categories of Body, Effort, Shape, Space (BESS) and a Final Application Project, all the modules include integration into the full framework of LMA. The title of the Module represents the area through which we enter LMA/BF, and where our in-depth explorations are focused. Each category of BESS reveals a picture of the whole of our LMA/BF system, and experientially draws out the interconnections between each of the categories.

For Module and full Program information see www.labaninternational.org; www.labancan.org; or contact info@labancan.org.

About Leslie’s work

Leslie’s work with Laban Movement Analysis encompasses three main areas:

Laban for Animators: the aesthetic foundation of nonverbal communication in the art form of animation, including aesthetic guidelines for creating believable, expressive animated characters, and style analysis of animated movement.

Visualization of LMA theories through the creation of 3D computer animated imagery. Pedagogically, these theories are demonstrated and experienced through dance-movement and the use of movement notation symbols. Visualization of movement theory contributes a new visual perception of LMA concepts and new pedagogical methods.

Creation of experimental animated film, using traditional and digital media, centering on the use of LMA as a creative tool for the aesthetic exploration of movement dynamics, rhythmic phrasing and pattern.

Courses and consulting work

Leslie incorporates LMA into her 3D Character Animation and related courses in the full time Animation BFA degree program at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Course assignments are based on LMA principles, and feedback to students is given through the lens of LMA-based observation and description. Leslie has given Laban for Animators workshops at a variety of computer game studios, which provide a broad overview of the LMA system, emphasizing how it can be applied to animation through designing a Movement Signature for animated characters, and through coaching motion-capture talent to achieve specific movement qualities.

Recent publications

Leslie is currently developing a book proposal for Laban for Animators. As a dance educator, LMA is a constant source of inspiration. It provides me with additional approaches and methodologies for dance/movement training and its underlying philosophy resonates with my own beliefs about educating the whole person and acknowledging the creative and expressive potential within each individual.
