What is LMA?

Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) is an effective framework for observing, describing and understanding human movement and what it expresses. LMA structures movement into five categories: Body, Effort, Shape, Space and Phrasing. In observing movement, we are able to notice how elements from each of these categories are layered and sequenced rhythmically over time. We notice unique movement patterns that reflect a person’s habitual behavior. Placed into context with circumstances going on around them, we are able to see how people relate to others in their environment through movement. LMA has been widely applied in the fields of dance, theater, dance therapy, physical therapy, ergonomics, sports, and psychology.
